The NVR, Server and Client surveillance components can be installed and run under Windows 7 using the following procedure.
The NVR, Server and Client surveillance components can be
installed and run under Windows 7 using the following
procedures.
These steps assume the following:
- Actions are performed when logged in as a local administrator
level user.
- The PC is not part of a Windows Domain.
- The local system's group policies are set to their
defaults.
This section is based on Windows 7 Ultimate Edition version. The
procedure for other versions may differ slightly.
NVR Component
- Install Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005SP3 (use the 64-bit
version if installing on a Windows 7 - 64bit), if not already
present.
- Install Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, if not already
present.
- Locate the setup.exe file for the Quorum NVR in Windows
Explorer.
- Right-click setup.exe and select Run as Administrator.
- If you have user account control (UAC) switched on, click Yes
in response to the message box "Do you want to allow the following
program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this
computer?"
- The NVR component installer dialog, and under certain
circumstances, the Program Compatibility Assistant dialog are
displayed. If this occurs, leave the Program Compatibility
Assistant window open, and follow NVR component installation
instructions for Windows XP and Windows 2003R2 Server, as described
in the user guide.
- If the Program Compatibility Assistant was started by Windows
7, then once the setup program has completed, close the
Compatibility Assistant.
NVR Licensing
The NVR Component needs to be licensed. If this was not done
during installation then it should be carried out before attempting
to start the NVR. To license the NVR component:
- Locate the NVR licensing helper shortcut in the Start
menu.
- Right-click the shortcut, and choose Run as Administrator.
- Follow the instructions for licensing in the Quorum NVR user
guide.
Note: You may have to switch off or add the
licensing application name to the list of programs allowed to
interact with the Internet in Windows 7 Firewall. See the relevant
section detailing this in the user guide.
Starting the NVR
You cannot start or stop the NVR component using the Start
menu shortcuts. If you attempt this, the following window
appears:

Instead, you must use Windows Services' Administrative Tools
Control Panel>System and Security>Administrative
Tools>Services.
If UAC (User Account Control) is switched on, click Yes to
continue. The Services control panel applet will open.
To manually start the Quorum NVR service, select the NVR
service, right-click and choose Start.
Note: The NVR service name can differ from the
one shown in the example. Please refer to the installation section
of the NVR component for Windows XP and 2003 R2 to obtain the name
of the service as it appears in the Services list.

- To start the Quorum NVR service now and every time the PC is
booted, choose Properties, change start-up type to Automatic, click
Start, then click OK.
- To stop the NVR service, locate the entry Quorum NVR service,
select, right-click and choose Stop. If the service was set to
automatic, then the next time the PC is rebooted the service will
start. To prevent this choose Properties, change startup type to
manual, click Stop, then click OK.
Server Component
- Install Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005SP3 (use the 64-bit
version if installing on a Windows 7 - 64bit), if not already
present.
- Install Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, if not already
present.
- Locate the setup.exe file for the Server component in Windows
Explorer.
- Right-click setup.exe and select Run as Administrator.
- If you have user account control (UAC) switched on, click Yes
in response to the message-box "Do you want to allow the following
program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this
computer?"
- The Server component installer dialog and the Program
Compatibility Assistant dialog are displayed. At this stage leave
the Program Compatibility Assistant window open, and follow Server
component installation instructions for Windows XP and Windows
2003R2 Server.
- Once the installation is complete, close the Program
Compatibility Assistant.
- Use the Start menu entry to license the server.
Starting the Server
You cannot start or stop the Server component using the Start menu
shortcuts. If you attempt this, the following window appears:

Instead, you must use the services administrative tools Control
Panel>System and Security>Administrative Tools>Services.
Click Yes to open the services program if you have UAC switched
on.
To manually start the Quorum Server service, select, right-click
and choose Start.

- To start the Quorum Server service now and every time the PC is
booted, select Properties, change start-up type to Automatic, click
Start, then click OK.
- To stop the Server service, locate the entry Quorum Server
service, select, right-click and choose Stop. If the service was
set to automatic, then the next time the PC is rebooted the service
will start. To prevent this choose Properties, change startup type
to manual, click Stop, then click OK.
Client Component
- Install Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, if not already
present.
- Locate the setup.exe file for the Client component in Windows
Explorer.
- Right-click setup.exe and select Run as Administrator.
- To configure the client so that it always starts in
administrator user, see "Configuring Client Startup" below.
- If you have user account control (UAC) switched on, click Yes
in response to the message-box "Do you want to allow the following
program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this
computer?"
- The client installer dialog and (possibly) the Program
Compatibility Assistant dialog are displayed. At this stage, leave
the Program Compatibility Assistant window open, and follow Client
component installation instructions for Windows XP and Windows
2003R2 Server.
- Once the installation is complete close the Program
Compatibility Assistant (if it is open).
Configuring Client Startup
To configure the client so that it always starts as an
administrator level user:
- Locate the start-menu shortcut for the Client Component.
- Right-click the short-cut and choose Properties to open the
Properites dialog.
- Click the Compatability tab.
- Under Privilege Level, check the Run this program as an
administrator box.
- Click OK.

Firewall Usage
You may need to disable the Windows 7 firewall in order to access
your devices, server component or NVR component.
If you are unable to configure the Windows 7 Firewall this is
most likely to be due to an attached domain controller; if so, you
can disable the whole firewall as follows:
- Locate the Windows Firewall service in Services program
launched from Control Panel>System and
Security>Administrative Tools.
- Right-click Windows Firewall service and select
Properties.
- In the Properties dialog click the General tab.
- Click Stop, if enabled, to stop the firewall service.
- You must restart your computer for this change to take
effect.
To ensure that the firewall service does not restart when the
computer is rebooted, change the start-up type to Disabled and
click Apply, then click OK.

Caution: If you choose to run the Windows firewall
(not recommended) be aware that by default the notification when
the firewall blocks a new program is NOT switched on. This means
that you will be unaware that communications between surveillance
components and devices is being blocked.
To enable this notification, select Control Panel>System and
Security>Windows Firewall. Select "Change notification settings"
in the actions pane to the left of the Control Panel>System and
Security>Windows Firewall.

You must also add the Server, NVR and Client components to all
profiles (Domain, Home/private, public networks). To do this:
- Select "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall" in
the actions pane to the left of the Control Panel>System and
Security>Windows Firewall.
- Click "Allow another program", then in the Add a Program dialog
click Browse to open an Explorer window and locate the executable
for the installed surveillance component. The executable name and
location for this component is described in the Firewall section in
the installation section of your surveillance suite manual.
- Once added, locate the added file in the Allowed programs and
features list, click Change Settings, then make sure that there are
checks against the Domain, Home/Work and Public columns.
- When done, click OK.

This illustrates how to add the Server to all domains - the
procedure is similar for the Client and NVR.
